Google Business Profile
Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up on Google Maps
If your business has disappeared from Google Maps, the first step is diagnosis, not panic. There are a handful of common causes, and most of them are fixable.
Work through this list in order. It is written for local service businesses, but the same logic applies to most local profiles.
1. Is the profile verified and active?
An unverified or suspended profile may still exist in your dashboard while being invisible to customers. Check the status in the Google Business Profile manager. If there is a suspension notice, read the reason before making changes.
2. Is the business name compliant?
Adding keywords to the business name — "Joe's Plumbing Clearwater Emergency 24/7" — violates Google's guidelines and can lead to suspension or suppression. Use the real-world business name.
3. Is the primary category correct?
The primary category has a strong influence on which searches you appear for. If a plumber is categorized as a general contractor, the profile is competing in the wrong space.
4. Are the service areas realistic?
Very large or unrelated service areas can look manipulative. Set the areas you genuinely serve, and keep them consistent with your website.
5. Do duplicates exist?
Old listings from a previous address, a previous name or a previous agency can split reviews and confuse the profile. Search for the business name and phone number, then resolve duplicates through Google.
6. Are the contact details consistent?
One phone number, one website address, one address or service area — across the profile, the site, vehicles and citations. Inconsistency makes matching harder.
7. Is there evidence of activity?
Recent photos, review responses and occasional posts help. A profile that has not been touched in a year looks less alive than a competitor's.
8. Is the competition simply closer?
Local results are influenced by the searcher's location. A business outside the immediate area may not appear in the map pack for searchers in a specific neighbourhood, even with a strong profile.
9. Is the website helping?
The profile links to your site. If that page is slow, broken or unclear, the profile's performance suffers. Make sure the landing page matches the service and area.
A quick diagnostic order
- Verify the profile status.
- Check the name, category and service areas.
- Search for duplicates.
- Confirm contact details everywhere.
- Add recent photos and respond to reviews.
- Check the website page linked from the profile.
FAQ
How long does it take to reappear?
If it is a verification or duplicate issue, it depends on Google's review. Fixing profile details can take days to weeks to be reflected.
Can I create a new profile instead?
Creating a second profile for the same business usually makes things worse. Diagnose the existing one first.
Do I need to post every week?
No. Consistency matters more than frequency. A few useful updates a month and regular photos are enough.
Next step
If the profile is verified and complete and still not appearing, the cause is usually competition, proximity or a website issue. A structured review of the profile and the linked pages will show which one applies.
